Import Requirements

Health Requirements for Dogs and Cats Originiating in Canada and the U.S:

1) Completed Application to Import Domestic Animals
2) Completed Veterinary Health Certificate (48 hour Bahamian). Present this along with the animal to a licensed Bahamian Veterinarian within 48 hours of arrival to the Bahamas. It must be issued in the country of origin not more than 48 hours prior to arrival.
3) Completed Country of Origin Health Certificate.
4) Proof of vaccination for the following canine diseases: Canine Distemper, Parvo, Para Influenza, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis and Rabies
5) Proof of vaccination for the following feline diseases: Feline Rabies, Panleukopenia, Rhinotraeheitis, Calicivirus , Adernonviris, Pneumonitis and Leukiemia.
6) Control of external and internal parasites. Go ahead with the treatments (Frontline, fipronil and a praziquantal) to be on the safe side.
7) Approval is not given for animals under six months of age.
8) Rabies Shots: One year Rabies vaccination can’t be less than 1 month and more than 10 months. Three year Rabies vaccination can’t be less than 1 month and more than 34 months.

Until recently, the Rabies Certificate was all that was needed, but that is changing and depending on the inspector. We believe the safe route is to have all the required shots and treatments.

Duty for permanent entry for dogs, cats, cattle and horses is calculated at $10.00 plus ½% of the value of the animal. This is only for “permanent entry”. Most entries will not be permanent.
